Music Therapy

Delivered by: Resources for Autism

Music therapy uses music, words and play to create a safe, contained space and foster a positive therapeutic relationship. A music therapist draws on a range of approaches to music (including improvisation, song writing, turn-taking games and musical activities) in their work to develop aims suited to the needs of each individual. These sessions may be 1:1 or in a small group.

The benefits of music therapy can include:

  • Enhanced communication and self-expression
  • Emotional regulation and reduced anxiety
  • Developed awareness of self and others
  • Improved listening skills and capacity to share
  • Increased focus and concentration span
  • More flexible and creative play
